The little rescue with a big heart

Our primary mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving, permanent homes for homeless dogs, specifically dogs in shelters at-risk of euthanasia and dogs whose owners can no longer care for them. We believe in compassionate rescue when the dog is enduring inhumane living conditions or likely to be deemed less adoptable due to age, health, emotional state, or breed. We ensure that all the dogs we take into our rescue, regardless of individual needs, are cared for with love and compassion for the duration of their lives.

K9 Kismet Dog Rescue

Our resident love bug Ivy is still looking for a foster. This incredibly affectionate girl hasn’t met a human she doesn’t love. Seriously, she loves all of them! Ivy is house-trained, crate-trained, and good on leash. She is smart, cuddly, and eager to please. Ivy is still learning to be confident and comfortable around other dogs, so (for now anyway) we believe she would do best as a only dog or paired with a calm, older dog about her size. No cats, please.

Back story: Ivy first came to our rescue during the summer of 2022 as a two-year-old mama pup with seven nine-week-old pups. They all lived outdoors in someone’s backyard—hot, dirty, and flea-infested. We addressed her medical needs and would go on to find her a wonderful home. Unfortunately, Ivy’s world was turned upside down in March of 2024 when her adoptive mom unexpectedly passed away. Once a K9 Kismet dog, always a K9 Kismet dog, so we jumped into action to bring her back into the fold. We knew she’d need a safe place where she could begin to heal (and fast) so we enrolled her in a trusted board-and-train facility; but boarding is not a long term solution, and Ivy is more than ready to get back into a home.

If you live in Long Beach, California, or its surrounding cities, and have space in your heart and home for our resident love bug, please apply to foster today!

In August, Cowboy was diagnosed with subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma, an agressive cancer with high metastasis rates. Our vet did surgery to remove the cancer, but due to the size and location of the tumor, he was unable to get clear margins. Sadly, the tumor grew back and spread with a vengeance, invading the deeper layers of tissue and musculature. Additional complicated surgery with lengthy recovery was considered, but when we learned it would likely only give him a few extra months, we made the heartbreaking decision to forgo additional surgery to give him as much quality time with his fosters as possible.

A few weeks ago, Cowboy’s tumor started to bleed out. We were able to control the bleeding temporarily, but we knew this meant Cowboy didn’t have much time left with us. On Friday, Cowboy’s rescue family gathered to spend one last afternoon with our beautiful boy. It was an afternoon filled with fun, love, cuddles, and every special treat he could eat.

Cow would melt people’s hearts on a regular basis because his love language involved gentle physical contact: On walks and jogs, he’d nudge his fosters’ hands to let them know he’s having fun, he gave the politest kisses, and when he took treats, it was in the softest way possible. He was most content with a squeaky toy and long, guilt-free naps stretched out on his back. (In that position is actually how we met him, in his cramped concrete abode at the shelter.) Cow was the boy who could light up a room with his big grin and it is his sweet face that we’ll always remember him.

Adopted and returned twice, Cow’s doting fosters helped us keep the promise we made to him the day we made him a pack member. They are the consistency he deserved and have been there for him (and us) every step of the way. For that, we will be forever grateful.

Thank you for letting us love you, Cow. Run free now, sweet boy.

Foster

As a foster-based rescue, our primary need is short and long-term fosters. Fostering costs you nothing; we cover all expenses. Whether you’re a seasoned foster who can handle some of our toughest cases, or a first-timer looking to ease into the process, we want to hear from you.

Adopt

By providing a forever home for a dog in rescue, you're helping to free up a foster home, which allows us to help another dog in need. The dogs in our care are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered (unless medically waived), microchipped, and receive regular wellness exams, preventative treatment, specialty care as needed. If you’re interested in meeting a K9 Kismet pack member, please fill out the adoption application to begin the process.

donate

As a 100% volunteer-run organization, your tax-deductible donation goes directly to the dogs in our care. It provides funds for everything from life saving surgeries to ID tags. Every dollar has purpose and is put to work for the dogs we serve. Help us say yes to the next dog in need.
